A Day of Rescue: Bringing Indra Home

August 06, 20222 min read

Have you ever heard the phrase, “One person’s trash is another person’s treasure?”

There is no better example of this than what happened to 5832 now Indra.

After seeing her video on a local kill pen I knew she needed to be my next horse.

She had been living in rough conditions at the kill pen, and who knows how bad before that.

We were lucky enough to pick her up and bring her home to quarantine. This is the story of that day.

The Moment of Rescue

When we first saw Indra, she was already standing in the indoor arena ready and waiting to load right on the trailer.

You could tell she did not care for the place with hundreds of horses coming in and out. But her personality immediately showed through as she held her head as high as it would go and snorted the whole walk to the trailer.

She was ready to go anywhere but there, and to our utter surprise loaded right up into the trailer!

And with that our adventure back down to the Wisconsin/Illinois border began!

The Road to Quarantine

Indra settled into our trailer easily and made the journey back to her quarantine pasture without any issue.

Once we arrived at the quarantine area, however, it was clear that Indra had been through a great deal in her short life—she had proud flesh on one of her back feet and had been exposed to strangles (a serious bacterial infection). We got right to work cleaning up the wound and giving Indra some much-needed attention.

A Bright Future for Indra

Now that Indra has been brought into quarantine for 30 days, where she will remain until we are certain she isn't sick with anything else, we can finally start thinking about what lies ahead for this beautiful horse. With proper care and nutrition, Indra will have every chance of making a performance horse, but now matter what she will be loved and appreciated for years to come!

Rescuing horses like Indra is one of the most rewarding experiences anyone could hope for—it is a reminder that there is always hope amidst even the harshest conditions. It also serves as an important reminder that animals need us more than ever before; they need us to be kind stewards who are willing to go above and beyond in order to ensure their safety and wellbeing. Every animal deserves love and respect – no matter how difficult their past may have been - so let’s make sure they get it!
