Hey there, fellow equestrians and horse enthusiasts! Remember me? Last October, I had the incredible opportunity to learn from the one and only Brad Cutshall during his clinic at Jeske Equestrian. And guess what? I couldn't resist going back for more!
So, here I am, bursting with excitement to recount my latest adventure at the recent Brad Cutshall Clinic at Equestrian Events. Buckle up as I guide you through the whirlwind of revelations and breakthroughs I experienced during this unforgettable weekend.
Rideability: Changing It Up for Success
One of the first nuggets of wisdom that resonated with me was the concept of "changing it up for rideability." Brad emphasized the importance of versatility in our training routines to enhance our horse's adaptability and responsiveness. Judges in the show ring are craving preparation like never before, and this mantra needs to serve as a compass for navigating the evolving landscape of competitive dressage.
Ratio Matters: Balancing Precision with Fluidity
Brad introduced us to the 6 to 1 ratio rule – for every tight or technically demanding movement, incorporate six larger, more expansive ones during training for every one we ask for at a high level. This principle struck a chord with me, highlighting the delicate balance between precision and fluidity in our riding. It’s not just about nailing the intricate movements but also about cultivating a harmonious flow throughout our sessions.
Bend: Beyond Leads and Towards Suppleness
Forget about associating bend with lead! Brad shattered this myth, emphasizing that bend should be independent of the lead. Instead, focus on achieving maximum suppleness and balance, regardless of the direction you're traveling in. It’s all about unlocking your horse's true potential by refining their flexibility and responsiveness.
If your horse's shoulders are falling inside the hind legs, try a counter bend to regain balance and center the horse. Remember, the inside rein indicates a turn, so use it to guide the outside rein and keep the shoulders straight. If you're still struggling, focus on lifting through the sternum and maintaining upright shoulders for better control and stability.
This insight truly resonated with me as Indra and I strive to refine our Canter and achieve a more collected, controlled three-beat gait. Implementing this advice immediately upon returning home yielded remarkable results. With this newfound understanding in mind, our balance improved noticeably during our very first ride back.
Diagnostic Lateral Work: A Window into Your Horse's Trot Quality
Using the shoulder-in as a diagnostic tool was a game-changer for me. Brad taught us to use this lateral movement to gauge the quality of our horse's trot. If they struggle to maintain balance during the shoulder-in, it's a clear indicator that adjustments are needed to enhance their overall trot performance.
Honesty in Partnership: A Priceless Asset
Throughout the two-day clinic, Brad repeatedly emphasized the importance of honesty in various aspects, including movement, suppleness, and responsiveness. His mantra of "that's not honest" served as a guiding principle for riders, urging them to seek authenticity and integrity in their interactions with their horses.
Brad's reminder about the honesty in our horse partnerships struck a chord with me. Reflecting on my journey with Indra, I realized how fortunate I am to have a Big Girl who embodies integrity and unwavering dedication to our shared pursuits. It's a priceless bond that fuels our progress and strengthens our connection with each ride.
Forward Motion: It's All in the Hind Legs
Who knew that forward motion had little to do with speed and everything to do with hind leg engagement? It you have been studying dressage for awhile you do, but Brad's insights redefined my understanding of forward movement, highlighting the pivotal role of hind leg reach in propelling our horses with purpose and power.
Embracing Trial and Error: Diagnostics, Not Mistakes
Encouragement to embrace experimentation, to remember that every stumble is not a setback but rather a step towards clarity and refinement. By treating each challenge as a diagnostic opportunity, we pave the way for breakthroughs and progress in our journey towards excellence.
Closing Thoughts
From refining our rideability to nurturing honesty in our partnerships, each lesson serves as a compass guiding me towards greater harmony and connection with my beloved Indra. Here's to embracing the journey, one stride at a time!
As I bid farewell to the Brad Cutshall Clinic, I carry with me a treasure trove of insights and inspiration to fuel my equestrian endeavors. I did promise to ride with him next time he is in the area, so keep an eye out for that!
Until next time, happy riding!
